The Scottsburg Kiwaniannes were chartered by Kiwanis International on February 16, 1984. When Kiwanis was founded in January 1916, it was a men’s service club. In January 1984, Kiwanis International approved the chartering of Kiwanianne Clubs for women, spouses and widows of Kiwanis members.
The Scottsburg Kiwaniannes were the first Kiwaniannes Club chartered in the Kiwanis Indiana District. The Kiwaniannes were sponsored by the Scottsburg Kiwanis Club to provide our women the opportunity to support the objects and goals of Kiwanis and assist the Kiwanis Club in community service projects as well as conduct service projects of their own. Millie Cooper was elected the first president.
On July 7, 1987, Delegates at the 72nd Annual Kiwanis International Convention voted to amend the constitution and bylaws to allow women to be members. Immediately Kiwanianne Clubs worldwide were disbanded and 1,500 former Kiwaniannes joined Kiwanis as members. However, in Scottsburg, the Kiwaniannes continued unabated to meet and serve kids in our community. It was only in 2013 they chose to disband. For 30 years they had served the kids in Scott County with distinction. They awarded scholarships and ran the Taco Wagon while participating in Kiwanis events and projects and met once a month.
The Scottsburg Kiwanis Club Board of Directors voted in 2014 to honor our Kiwaniannes by inducting them into the Scottsburg Kiwanis Club as Honorary Members. Rosie Alsup was the last serving president of the Kiwaniannes. On May 29, 2014, 14 members of the Kiwaniannes were inducted as Honorary Members in the Scottsburg Kiwanis Club. These members are: Millie Julian, Donna Craig, Winnie Smith, Gloria Craig, Doris Pearcy, Rosie Alsup, Sonja Mastin, Millie Cooper, Phyllis Cowles, Marie Craig, Paula Johnson, Cindy Lohr, Marilyn Rogers and Regina Hughbanks.
